In October of 2020, Colombian national Sahily Carrero experienced a work-related accident, losing her right arm. Now a wellness coach based in Queensland, she provides advice to those facing similar situations through social media.
Speaking with The Wire’s Eduardo Jordan, Ms Carrero recalls the moment she decided to share her journey with the world after spending a month in the hospital.
“I was in my bed all the time. I couldn't eat by myself. I wasn't thinking in that moment social media,” she says. “After I do the rehab, all these big challenges…I start thinking maybe I should do it.”
The wellness coach believes every individual is fighting an internal battle within themselves, whether they realise it or not.
“Sometimes we don't know what people is facing…everyone has their own challenge,” Ms Carrero says. “I just want to give that motivation to people facing that challenge to see another view of what is out there.”
A soccer player since the age of 8, the Colombian national explains how the sport has helped her maintain her sense of self.
I really connect all my life with soccer because it's just go and enjoy and forget everything.

After her recovery, Ms Carrero decided to join a community team, quickly realising how different playing sport is without the use of both limbs.
“At the start…it was challenging just to know how to run. We don't think about it, but when we run, we move our arms to give that power to the run.”
Ms Carrero, who plays midfield, says the biggest challenge is protecting the ball.
We usually open our arms just to protect the ball. People can just take the ball off me, but I try to adjust my body to protect the ball.

The wellness coach says people may make assumptions about what she can and can’t do, but she’s more focused on improving herself and helping others achieve their goals.
“Every day you have an opportunity to get up and be better and be happy for yourself…because the only moment we have is the present,” Ms Carrero says.
