The partnership between Attitude Foundation and 3ZZZ through the Emerging Voices program highlights the importance of creating accessible pathways for people with disabilities in media. Attitude Foundation, led by Matt Field, strives to promote a better understanding of disability in media by ensuring authentic representation. The Emerging Voices program gives participants hands-on experience in broadcasting, while addressing the systemic barriers that people with disabilities often face when trying to enter the media industry.
At 3ZZZ, an ethnic and multicultural community broadcaster, participants receive training in broadcasting, from interview techniques to using editing software and creating podcasts. The program fosters not only career development but also offers participants the chance to build confidence, enhance their technical skills, and thrive socially. For example, James Harkness, who dreams of starting a radio show focused on psychosis, and Kaed Dawber, who now has the confidence to advocate for people with disabilities, both attribute their personal and professional development to the program.
Emerging Voices not only equips participants with the tools to succeed but also challenges the media landscape to be more inclusive. As Field notes, accessibility in media is a "win-win" for everyone, showing that when participants can access what they need to succeed, they not only thrive in their careers but also grow socially, breaking down stigmas and advocating for a more inclusive society.

My name's Matthew Field, I'm the CEO of the Attitude Foundation. The Attitude Foundation exists to promote a better understanding of disability through the media. If you don't have people with disability in the room, behind the scenes, in the writing rooms etc, then you're never going to get a really authentic betrayal of disability.

Emerging Voices is our project to create pathways for the next wave of people with disability to get hands -on experience in industry -based environments.

What's been covered in the program has realistically been a day -to -day operation of a radio station. It's also being able to use the recording facilities and editing facilities as well.
James Harkness
I've always been interested in radio and I like the idea of being an announcer. My name's James, you're listening to 3ZZZ 92 .3 FM. This is Melbourne Ethnic Community Radio. I really enjoyed learning some of the theory around interviewing techniques and the different types of interviews.
Kaed Dawber
We've covered a wide variety of topics within the radiosphere. We've learnt how to edit on various platforms and softwares.
Barbara Guignard-Drieberg
The course was excellent. It was teaching us how to use equipment but also how to project our voices and how to make a short podcast. I've been really, really loving it.

I was very privileged and honoured to get taught by Moemina. Doing this radio course for people with lots of disabilities, we can leave, learn and get employment opportunities and it's amazing.
Matthew Field
When putting a program together like this we have to ensure that the participants are going into an environment that's disability aware and disability friendly. 3ZZZ have been fantastic in terms of working with us to ensure that the participants have had a really seamless, accessible and inclusive experience.
Barbara Guignard-Drieberg 02:19
This is meant for people with disabilities, so I've got low vision. It was very interesting for me to be with people from other disabilities.
James Harkness
I'm amazed by the diversity of the people here. There's such interesting life stories.
Iga Gunnarsdottir
A feeling of inclusion, a feeling of wellbeing. Making some friendships here in the group as well and encouraging each other to do our very best is just a fantastic feeling.
Kaed Dawber
I've made friendships out of this program. Hopefully I've made lifelong friends. Definitely speak to each other in the future.
Moemina Shukur
I think a program like this is really important to have diverse voices in the media space from people with disabilities but it also allows people with disabilities to gain confidence around a mic or a camera. A lot of our students are keen to get involved in other spaces of media, not just radio.
Kaed Dawber
This program has given myself a great sense of confidence within myself and a real desire to go forward and advocate for people with disabilities. I hope to use these skills and techniques to further my career.
James Harkness
I would like to start my own community radio show or my own podcast. I'd like to do a radio show all about psychosis and what it's like to experience that.
Madeline Prasad 03:38
I'm really passionate to go out and get a job in radio or do some more training because it up to a lot of other things out in society.
Barbara Guignard-Drieberg
I found myself making an interview and it was filmed and I sent it to all my family and friends and they think I'm a big shot now.
Matthew Field 03:57
We think a program like Emerging Voices is incredibly important. We know that there are significant barriers that people with disability face to be able to participate in media. We want through this program to demonstrate a best practice approach for media to open their doors to people with disability. Being accessible and inclusive to people with disability is a win -win for all.
Kaed Dawber
As a person with a disability I think it is important to highlight the marginalisations within the media and general society and just make it more accessible for everyone.
Madeline Prasad 04:30
I really appreciate all of this because it's going to go a long way because people with disabilities, you can do it. There's a stigma, you're going to break this stigma and show government and funding bodies we can achieve it and do it.
